Allergies?

Max has had a few mysterious reactions that cause widespread hives and swelling.  This first happened back in NYC when he was going through his ear infection phase.  We assumed the culprit was an anti-biotic, but now we are not so certain.

Below are two photos showing his latest reaction at the beginning of December.  It lasted 4-5 days and began with his feet swelling causing pain when he attempted to walk.  He had a tiny cold at the time.   I took him to the pediatrician and the poor guy had to go on steroids to control the itching and get rid of the welts.  The last time, we didn't need steroids.

These photos below show the poor guy at the allergist where his back was poked, hard!  I have never had this testing and assumed it felt like a scratch.  The way this guy screamed, I beg to differ.  And, the nurse was absolutely HORRIBLE.  While Max was writhing in pain, screaming and trying to get away from me and her and I was trying to wrangle the guy so she could poke him with the second set, she was saying to me "this is ridiculous, I have other patients to get to!!!!".  I asked her politely if this practice handled children as her reaction was obnoxious given this was a pediatric allergy practice...supposedly.  She replied, "why yes, our patients are mostly children".  I opened my eyes really wide to that response and said nothing more.

I have been fortunate with Max in that most practices (be it, eyes, allergy, ears, etc.) we have been to are very patient, encouraging and supportive of the scary, painful nature of many of the required tests.  This practice was not and I will not return!

The good news is the guy is not allergic to anything they tested him...evidently, the allergy can be triggered by a virus...hence the small cold he had, which probably occurred every time he has had this allergic reaction.  Interested to hear if anyone has any comments on their own experiences with this type of allergy (unknown so far) or what to do in those situations.  I was very nice and polite to the nurse as I wanted to set a good example for Max by not going off on her horrible reaction to my son's pain.
